Child Fatality Investigation Program

Child Death Investigation Teams utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate child deaths and include representatives from:
District Attorney’s Office
Law Enforcement
Coroner or Medical Examiner’s Office
Department of Family and Children Services Investigations
The Georgia Child Fatality Investigation Program is the result of a partnership between the Division of Family and Children Services, the Georgia Child Fatality Review Panel, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Director of our program, Rachelle Carnesale, was a prosecutor for twelve years, specializing in child abuse cases for the last nine years and leading the DeKalb County Child Death Investigation Team from 1999 to 2004.
The program is available to provide without cost:
- Assistance in the development of child death investigation teams and protocols;
- Training and support for existing child death investigation teams;
- Assistance in the investigation and prosecution of child homicides and cases involving serious injuries;
- Training for child abuse professionals.
Currently, a total of Twelve judicial circuits have agreed to participate in a child death investigation team pilot project around
